2. Choosing the Right Registration Pathway

Every internationally qualified doctor must register with AHPRA via the Medical Board of Australia. But there are multiple pathways depending on your background.

Competent Authority Pathway

If you’ve qualified and practised in a recognised jurisdiction (e.g. UK General Medical Council, Irish Medical Council), you may be eligible for this streamlined route to general registration — often without sitting AMC exams.

Standard Pathway

For those not eligible for the Competent Authority route, this involves full assessment of clinical knowledge and skills, via AMC examinations or workplace-based assessment.

Specialist / SIMG Pathways

Australia introduced the Expedited Specialist Pathway in October 2024 to help qualified specialists from comparable health systems bypass lengthy college comparability checks.

As of mid-2025, eligible specialties include General Practice, Anaesthesia, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, with others under review.

Under this pathway, you’ll usually complete a short period of supervised practice (often six months) along with orientation and cultural safety training before being granted full specialist registration.

Note: The expedited pathway does not automatically lead to fellowship in a specialist college; some specialists may choose to pursue college fellowship separately once practising in Australia.

3. The Credential & Verification Steps

• Have your medical training and specialty qualifications verified by the Australian Medical Council (AMC)via primary source verification (often via ECFMG / EPIC).
• Confirm that your credentials match the accepted standards and, for specialists, whether your qualification is listed on the Expedited Specialist list.
• Once verified, apply to AHPRA / the Medical Board with all required documentation, fees, and a supervision plan (if applicable).

4. Securing Employment & Visa Sponsorship

• In many cases, a job offer is required before visa sponsorship can be secured.
• Employers often assist with parts of the registration and visa navigation, especially for overseas recruits.
• The Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa remains the most common route, allowing doctors to work for 2–4 years under employer sponsorship. In some cases, it can also lead to permanent residency — though the Australian Government is gradually introducing a new “Skills in Demand” visa framework expected to evolve from the TSS visa over the next year.

5. Onboarding & Compliance After Arrival

• Apply for your Tax File Number (TFN) and open an Australian bank account.
• Ensure you have or arrange medical indemnity insurance before practising.
• For those billing public patients, you’ll need to secure a Medicare provider number— note that overseas doctors may face certain restrictions unless working in underserved or priority areas.
• Be ready for orientation, supervision, and cultural safety training, especially when entering via expedited specialist pathways.
