Can UK Doctors Move to Australia?

4 mins read

For many UK doctors, the idea of relocating to Australia is a real opportunity to step into a healthcare system that offers competitive pay, a healthier work-life balance, and a lifestyle that’s hard to beat.

At BluePrint Medical, we help UK-trained doctors make the move every day. Whether you’re a junior doctor looking for your first experience abroad, or a seasoned specialist ready for a change, this guide covers what you need to know.

Why More UK Doctors Are Moving to Australia

Australia is facing an ongoing shortage of doctors across a range of specialties. GPs, psychiatrists, anaesthetists, emergency medicine consultants, and obstetricians are especially in demand. Even junior doctors are being recruited into regional hospitals that need support.

But it’s not just about demand. Many UK doctors are drawn to:

  • A more balanced lifestyle
  • Shorter working hours
  • Stronger team culture in hospitals
  • Better weather and outdoor living
  • Higher base salaries in many roles

For some, it’s a temporary adventure. For others, it’s a long-term move.

How Registration Works

If you want to work in Australia, the first step is registering with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

For junior doctors, the most common route is the Competent Authority Pathway. If you’ve completed your medical degree and foundation training in the UK or Ireland, you may be eligible. You’ll need a confirmed job offer, provisional registration, and 12 months of supervised work in Australia. After that year, you can apply for full registration.

Specialists follow a different route. You’ll need to be assessed by the relevant Australian medical college to determine whether your training is comparable to local standards. The process can vary in complexity depending on your specialty, but some UK qualifications are now recognised more easily, especially in general practice, psychiatry, anaesthetics, and O&G.

It’s a process that can seem daunting, but that’s where we come in.

Visas and Sponsorship

You’ll also need a visa to live and work in Australia. The most common options include the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) or the Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186).

These visas require sponsorship from your employer, which is why having the right job offer is key. We work with hospitals and practices across Australia that are approved sponsors and are actively looking for UK-trained doctors.

What’s It Really Like to Live and Work in Australia?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some doctors choose big cities like Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane. Others are drawn to smaller regional hubs, where the cost of living is lower, the community is tighter, and the incentives for doctors are often better.

Common feedback from UK doctors includes:

  • “I get home before sunset and still have energy left.”
  • “The team culture here is amazing.”
  • “I didn’t realise how much I needed a reset until I got here.”

Yes, there’s paperwork. Yes, the move takes planning. But for many, the payoff is worth it.
