Behind the Scrubs with Nurse Darren
4 mins read
At Blueprint Nursing, we’re proud to support extraordinary nurses who go above and beyond. Recently, one of our travel nurses, Darren, shared his honest reflections on the journey so far working with Blueprint Nursing’s recruitment consultant Ali Jones.
From taking the leap into agency work to navigating the challenges and joys of life on contract, we’re so grateful he took the time to share his story with us.
How has your experience been working with BluePrint Nursing?
Reflecting on my experience from the very first time I posted about travel nursing on social media, a few agencies contacted me but you were consistent and incredibly prompt in assisting me with any queries or issues that arose. I had never been to Australia or worked as an RN in remote places before, but you gave me a sense of confidence and assurance to make it a reality. For me, it was now or never.
You took the time to understand my needs and offer suitable preferences so I could plan which was clear from the placements you suggested. You were able to secure work that aligned with my experience and skills. Your communication style is clear whether by email, phone or Messenger and you are supportive, approachable and friendly, which made it easy to discuss any requirements or concerns. My overall experience has been positive, and I really appreciate your support and the team’s help throughout the process.
If you were to give advice to someone who was just taking the leap into travel nursing what would it be?
My advice to newcomers is to know yourself, ask the ‘why’ questions, and weigh up the pros and cons of travel nursing especially if you have a family. Be open-minded, take the risk, and stay positive and adaptable, as each assignment is different in terms of staffing behaviours, attitudes and patient presentations.
Know the policies, research the locations and facilities, and ask yourself if the area aligns with your skills and if you’re willing to learn new ones. Be friendly, know your boundaries and personal space, stay professional, and connect with other nurses by networking to gain insights and support.
What did you love most about your contracts?
The ability to go to places I thought were impossible to visit and the opportunity to work in different environments and learn from diverse teams is really uplifting. In addition, the pay scale is motivating. Also, the flexibility and variety I’ve experienced have been great. My first two contracts were in the same area, but this time it will be different and that mix of excitement and anxiety gives me even more motivation to engage with the unknown and enjoy every moment.
How did you find the accommodation on your contracts?
The accommodation is comfortable, safe, and conveniently within the hospital grounds.
What was something you wish you knew before starting agency work?
I guess things like needing a Tax File Number, opening a bank account, and bringing my own uniforms, but that has all been sorted. Know what MMR is, what RSQ and RFDS mean, and why pay differs in each state. Reread and understand your contract and its terms and conditions, and research the locations and the things you can do to maintain work-life balance.
Would you recommend Ali and BluePrint Nursing to other Nurses?
Affirmative, I would recommend Ali and BluePrint nursing to other nurses and I already referred a few colleagues to Ali. This is because of her level of professionalism, support, and the ability to match me with suitable placements, offered uniform and free flights to and from NZ and within Australia and free accommodation.
Would you work with Ali and Blueprint Nursing again?
Absolutely yes because of my positive experiences and successful contracts, and I consider them a trusted partner for future opportunities.
