If you’ve trained in the UK, you almost certainly qualify for the Competent Authority Pathway (CAP), which lets you skip the AMC exams entirely. The three requirements: a primary medical degree from a GMC-accredited UK medical school, full GMC registration with a licence to practise, and at least 12 months of supervised postgraduate training completed.<\/p>\n
Meet all three and you’re eligible. You’ll start with provisional registration and move to general registration after 12 months of supervised work. AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) is the body that issues your registration.<\/p>\n
For specialists: the Expedited Specialist Pathway<\/strong><\/p>\n If you’re already a UK specialist, there’s now a much faster route. Since October 2024, the Expedited Specialist Pathway has been available for eligible overseas specialists, requiring only six months of supervised practice plus orientation training.<\/p>\n As of January 2026, the pathway covers six specialties: Psychiatry, Anaesthetics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General Practice, General Medicine, and General Paediatrics.<\/p>\n Why the demand is there<\/strong><\/p>\n Australia is facing a serious workforce shortage. The federal government’s own projections say the country is on track to face a shortage of more than 12,800 full-time equivalent GP and non-GP specialist doctors by 2048. IMGs are already 32% of Australia’s medical workforce and more than half of all rural doctors.<\/p>\n By 2048, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia are anticipated to face registrar shortfalls of between 30% and 40%.<\/p>\n Why South Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n Adelaide is one of the most affordable capital cities in Australia. Cost of living runs 15 to 20% below Sydney or Melbourne, and rent sits well below the two east coast capitals. According to recent 2026 market data, SA has the highest RMO\/HMO locum average in the country at $160 per hour, with the range spanning $140 to $180 per hour. Specialist locum rates run $2,000 to $3,500+ per day depending on specialty and location, and GP VMO rural rates sit at $1,800 to $3,000+ per day.<\/p>\n GP locum rates in SA are advertised at $240 to $260 per hour, and coastal proceduralist roles in Port Lincoln come in at $2,700 per day with travel, accommodation and car hire provided. Consultant Psychiatrist locums at Royal Adelaide are running $2,500 to $2,700 per day with flights, car and accommodation included.<\/p>\n The locations<\/strong><\/p>\n SA locum roles come up regularly across Adelaide, Gawler, Kingscote (Kangaroo Island), Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Victor Harbor and Whyalla. Beyond that, the state covers the Barossa Valley, the Fleurieu Peninsula, the Riverland along the Murray, the Limestone Coast around Mount Gambier, and the Flinders Ranges.<\/p>\n Distances are real but manageable.
